"Score the Drama" with Don Hillsberg
Join us in our Wednesday offering as we create a film score to the 1917 silent movie classic "Teddy at the Throttle" starring Gloria Swanson.  Gloria discovers that her evil guardian has been stealing her inheritance, so he ties her to the railroad tracks!  It's up to Teddy to save the day!  We will discuss how to create a score, using our harps as the actual "orchestra" to accompany this film.  Regardless of playing ability, size of harp, etc., all are welcome to join us (popcorn provided) for an unusual and fun day utilizing our musical talents and imagination.
There are many ways one can use a harp.  Leave this workshop with new ideas and techniques for using your instrument.

Harp and Guitar Workshop with CHRIS NEWMAN

String ensemble playing with particular reference to harp and guitar: how to create great arrangements when you have TOO MANY STRINGS!
A fun look at plucked string arranging for Irish and Scottish traditional music, swing jazz, bluegrass &c, with particular reference to harp and guitar. Many harpists have guitar-playing partners and would love to know how to approach the creation of duo arrangements. Well, here's your chance to learn from the master! Chris has over thirty years' experience of creating beautiful harp / guitar arrangements with Máire Ní Chathasaigh. You'll learn what to do and what not to do, the possibilities and the pitfalls. Be inspired!

Friday-Sunday, September 27-29, 2019
Advanced - Professional Level

Maire’s three day Irish Harp class will be limited in size in order that each participant can have the opportunity to get the most from the sessions. This 10 hour class will be tailored to the requests of the participants. Harpers may request in advance that specific tunes or techniques be covered.  This class is for the advanced – professional level players. Sunday session will be full speed ahead (participants may take Sue Richard’s Sunday class in lieu of the third session).

Friday - Saturday,  September 27-28, 2019
Intermediate Level
Learn a tune or two by ear, with music passed out at the end. Sue has a pretty good way to help you learn by ear. She will explain some of the differences between Irish and Scottish lilt, discuss the various dance forms (jig, reel, strathspey, march, etc), and discuss playing with relaxed hands and her version of technique

Friday - Saturday, September 27-28, 2019
Advanced Beginner Level

Come away to the beautiful bones of Celtic music. Jaimee will take participants through simple (and fun!) approaches to learning Irish and Scottish tunes. From moving airs, to spirited dance music, each piece will be shared in ways to help harpers continue on their own. A back-to-basics review of technique will be included and questions welcomed.

Playing without Injuries:
Dexterity Exercises for Celtic Music
All Levels
When Americans play Irish and Scottish tunes, they often play slowly and in straight rhythm. Here are some exercises to help you speed up, to play with lilt, and to simplify fingerings. They work!

Julie Norem Hawley will graciously continue to lead our Harp Circle, a very relaxed experience for all level harpers.  She sends music to interested players in advance, conducts a few practice sessions during the festival, and then leads us all playing on the streets of La Veta or Walsenburg.
